Engaging with the questions that shape the Global South
CARES undertakes research on the economic, social, ecological and political questions that shape the lives and livelihoods of people across the Global South.
Areas of Research
Agrarian Change & Agriculture: We examine changing agrarian relations, agricultural production, land and tenancy, rural livelihoods and the processes transforming agriculture and rural societies.
Labour & Working People: Our work explores employment, informalisation, migration, working conditions, rural and urban labour and the changing world of work.
Ecology & Sustainable Transitions: We engage with questions of ecological transition, agroecology, climate change, environmental sustainability and pathways towards more just and sustainable forms of development.
Political Economy & Development: We study development, inequality, economic transformation, public policy and the relationships between state, capital and society.
Gender & Social Reproduction: Our research considers gender relations, women's work, land and labour, social reproduction and struggles for women's liberation.
Popular Movements & Social Transformation: We engage with the histories and contemporary dynamics of popular movements, collective struggles and efforts towards social and economic transformation.
Agrarian South: Journal of Political Economy
A major platform for critical scholarship from and on the Global South. CARES publishes Agrarian South: Journal of Political Economy, an international peer-reviewed journal published through SAGE. The journal provides a platform for critical research and analysis on agrarian, labour, ecological and political-economic questions, with particular attention to experiences and perspectives from the Global South. Through the journal, CARES works with researchers and scholars from India and across Africa, Asia, Latin America and other parts of the Global South to foster critical scholarship and international intellectual exchange.
