The Agrarian South Network and its partners convened the Agrarian South Study Group 2022 around the theme “Late Neocolonialism: Current Issues in Political Economy.” Held from March to November 2022, the Study Group provided a sustained intellectual space for scholars, researchers, postgraduate students and political activists to critically examine contemporary transformations in the political economy of the Global South.
The Study Group focused on the continuing relevance and changing forms of neocolonialism in the contemporary world, examining how global economic structures, political institutions, financial systems and relations of power shape development trajectories and social transformation across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Through collective study and discussion, participants engaged with contemporary questions of capital accumulation, imperialism, dependency, uneven development, state–market relations, global economic governance, agrarian change and labour, situating these issues within longer histories of colonialism and postcolonial transformation.
The 2022 Study Group continued the Agrarian South Network’s commitment to bringing together diverse intellectual and political perspectives from across the Global South. It provided an opportunity for emerging scholars and activists to engage with critical traditions in political economy while connecting theoretical debates with concrete experiences of contemporary social and economic change.
